In the last six weeks, “Along The Road” has released six new podcast episodes for leaders at congregations and mid councils. With an array of guests from congregations and national agencies, the discussions focus on justice and inclusion, congregation meetings and well-being, and transforming and connectional ministries. As more miles in ministry are traveled, the ATR episodes point listeners to resources for leaders at councils large and small.
“Along the Road” recently released its 50th episode. Like many milestones, this one came with surprise at how quick the journey has felt and gratitude at the many experiences along the way. The episodes have become a trove of inquiry, inspiration and affirmation for church leaders around the country — and for the podcast’s hosts.
Five new “Along the Road” podcast episodes have been made available since November, three from the “Encounter” series for mid council and church leaders and two “Nourish” episodes for deacons and ruling elders.

“Nourish” and “Encounter,” two halves of the “Along the Road” podcast whole, are back with a second season. Building off last season’s discussions for ruling elders, deacons and other leaders of congregations and mid councils, season two will feature inspiring conversation for anyone in the church seeking to pair tradition with creativity. Becuase 2024 is a General Assembly year, there will be looks up the road to Salt Lake City.
“Along the Road,” the podcast series by Mid Council Ministries in the Office of the General Assembly, shared five new episodes in May before beginning a summer planning hiatus.
The last of the season’s 30 episodes was uploaded to podcast services and the Mid Council Ministries section of pcusa.org on the last day of the month, with the series hosts reflecting on the first season of “Encounter” and “Nourish” together.
“You are not tied to a manual,” says Manuel Silva-Esterrich by way of encouraging presbytery leaders to use the “new” Book of Order (12 years young this year) to explore new approaches to ministry as they care for their congregations. “It is a tool you can use. The tool shouldn’t use you.”
A guest in the second of two recent “Encounter” podcasts (part of the “Along the Road” series), Silva-Esterrich's words apply equally well to the first episode, which focuses on the experiences and perspectives of leaders in one especially innovative presbytery: New York City.
Three new “Along the Road” podcasts look at managing different calls and moving toward full representation at all levels of the church.
Nancy Taylor, Executive Director of the Presbyterian Historical Society, talks with “Nourish” host Martha Miller about being PHS executive director and a church deacon.
Other leaders from the Office of the General Assembly (“Encounter” guest host valerie izumi and Jihyun Oh) talk with General Assembly Committee on Representation (GACOR) co-moderators Anna Kendig Flores and Eric A. Thomas about the ongoing importance of representation work in the PC(USA) and the need for a sustained approach to …
With spring approaching, recent “Along the Road” podcasts look at ways ruling elders, deacons and mid council leaders can renew themselves and their faith communities through exercising individual passions, advocating for the rights of marginalized communities and “living into” updated church policies.
Providing for the financial future of church groups is the focus of two recent “Along the Road” podcasts. Both “Encounter” and “Nourish” episodes feature Presbyterian Foundation leaders sharing insights on responsible investing at all levels of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.).
