The Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) stands with transgender community members, affirms their sacredness - as they are created in the image of God - and asserts their deservedness of a dignified and respectful work environment. On Wednesday, President Trump issued a series of tweets that abruptly announced a ban on transgender people serving in the U.S. military. It is particularly disappointing given that this proclamation falls on the anniversary of President Truman’s Executive Order 9981 that abolished racial discrimination in the U.S. Armed Forces in 1948. This decision by President Trump reversed a gradual transformation under the Obama administration, which welcomed transgender people to serve openly.
<한국어><Espaňol> When considering the need for a personnel committee, the session should reflect upon the size of the congregation, the session, and the staff. While no longer specified within the Book of Order, it is fitting to remember the guidance from a former version of our Constitution, that said “The session ... has the responsibility ... to provide for the administration of the program of the church, including employment of nonordained staff, with concern for equal employment opportunity, fair employment practices, personnel policies, and the annual review of the adequacy of compensation for all staff, including all employees” (G-10.0102n, 2009/2011 edition).
Today, the General Assembly Mission Council (GAMC) of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) approved budgets of $82,097,234 for 2011, and $80,550,613 for 2012. These are in contrast to a 2010 budget of about $93.8 million.
"Our role is changing from doing mission on behalf of the church to inspiring, equipping and connecting the church for mission and ministry," said Linda Valentine, GAMC executive director. "At the same time, God calls us to look at our resources honestly. We must be sure we live within our means to sustain ministry into the future."
